Venue:

Canons House, 19 Madeira Rd, Mitcham

Detail:

Although algebra is mentioned in the National Curriculum for the first time in Year 6, algebraic thinking is actually very present throughout the primary phase.

This course looks at what algebra is and how it appears in the national curriculum from Years 1 to 6.

We will look at the ways in which algebraic thinking can be developed in young pupils, so they are ready for formal algebra in Year 6 and beyond. There will be opportunities to explore the use of concrete and pictorial representations used to teach algebra and how it applies to a teaching-for-mastery context.

As well as how it can be used to problem-solve and its application across areas such as geometry, measures and number, we will also have fun exploring algebra!

Outcomes:

  • Understand the definition of algebra
  • Understand where algebraic thinking appears in the primary curriculum
  • Be more confident when working with algebra
